October is Co-op Month, and this year's national theme is "Built for This Moment." For Pioneer, that's not a slogan. It's pretty much our whole history!
Pioneer Telephone Cooperative was founded in 1953 for a simple reason: the big phone companies didn't see enough profit in rural Oklahoma to string lines out to our farms and small towns, So our neighbors did it themselves. They pooled their resources, formed a cooperative, and built the network nobody else would. That's what co-ops have always done- when the market leaves a community behind, the community steps up.
Seventy-plus years later, the technology has changed, but the challenge hasn't! Reliable internet is now as essential as a phone line was in the '50s. Families need it for remote work and telehealth, students need it for homework, and local businesses need it to compete. And once again, rural areas are at risk of being left out.
That's why Pioneer keeps investing in fiber! Fiber is the fastest, most dependable internet available today, with symmetrical upload and download speeds, low latency, and no data caps. Not to mention it's future-proof, which is a fancy-schmancy way of saying the fiber we put in the ground today can handle whatever the internet throws at it for decades to come! It doesn't slow down when the whole neighborhood logs on at night, and it's built to handle whatever comes next. It's the kind of infrastructure that will serve our communities for decades, not just the next few years.
We also know we can't do it alone! Through partnerships with fellow cooperatives like Cimarron Electric Cooperative, Oklahoma Electric Cooperative, and CentraNet, the fiber division of Central Electric Cooperative, we share construction costs and resources to reach more rural homes faster and with less disruption. It's one of the core cooperative principles, cooperation among cooperatives, and it's working!
"Cooperatives were built for moments like this one. When the big providers look at a map and see empty space, we see our neighbors. No single company can connect all of rural Oklahoma on its own, but when cooperatives work together, we can build further and faster,” General Manager Blake Callaham said. “That's why we keep building, and why we keep building together."
Being a cooperative means we answer to our members, not outside shareholders. Every dollar we invest goes back into the communities we serve, through better infrastructure, scholarships, and support for local schools and organizations. We were built for this moment because our members built us for it.
This October, we're proud to celebrate the cooperative model and the people who make it work.
Thank you for being part of the Pioneer family!
